Steelers Spotlight: Heath Miller

Wherever Heath Miller goes, the “Heeeeeath” chant follows. The former Pittsburgh Steelers tight end is a fan favorite, even long after he left the game. Miller embodies what Steelers fans love: hard-working, serious, determined, and realistic. He spent 11 seasons with the Steelers, but his story begins before entering into the NFL.

Miller was born in Richlands, Virginia and played quarterback in high school. He achieved multiple awards during his time in high school and eventually led his team to its first state championship game in his senior year. Miller attended the University of Virginia, originally signing to play as the quarterback. He made the decision to transition to tight end during his redshirt freshman year, however. It only took Miller seven games to set the school record for touchdowns by a tight end. He was voted team captain before his junior season began. Miller was clearly a leader on and off the field. He ended his college career with most career receptions, yards, and touchdowns by a tight end ever. Miller skipped his senior season to enter into the NFL draft and was selected in the first round by the Steelers.

Miller was appointed starting tight end in his rookie year. He was named rookie of the year after finishing the season with 39 receptions, 459 yards, and six touchdowns. Miller also earned his first Super Bowl ring at the end of his rookie season. He continued to be named the starting tight end for the next three seasons and carried on racking up his statistics. In 2008, Miller made his second Super Bowl appearance and helped the team claim another championship. He was selected for his first Pro Bowl the following season. Miller was named the Steelers’ offensive captain in 2010 and made another Super Bowl appearance. He became the Steelers’ all-time leader in career receptions for a tight end in 2011, went to his second Pro Bowl in 2012, and was voted MVP by his teammates. After multiple injuries and accolades, Miller decided to retire after the 2015 season. He spent 11 years and season with the Steelers.

In Miller’s personal life, he has been involved in a number of charities. He has participated in the Salvation Army and WTAE TV’s Annual Mini Golf Classic as a host. Miller has also contributed to other charitable events, such as fashion shows and fundraising basketball games. He has spoken out about the difficulties he has faced post-retirement. The competition, feeling during game day, adrenaline rushes, and the team itself are aspects of the game he has said to miss the most. However, Miller said it was the right time for him to retire. Pittsburgh will always welcome him back home.
